Welcome to the Sanborn Public Library! Patrons of the library can now take advantage of many new services we now offer!
We have a website: www.sanborn.lib.ia.us On our website you can check out our schedule of current events, check our card catalog for what books, movies, books on CD, etc. to see what we have on hand, and also we have just digitized our old Sanborn Pioneers - so if you are a genealogy buff you can read some of our old Pioneers dating back to 1872! You can also reserve books online!
We also have 7 computers available for public use!
Sanborn has a long history of promoting its library as a vital part of the lives of its citizens, providing resources to enrich the minds of its youth and to broaden the minds of its adults. We have a group of town ladies that come every week to "Sit'n Stitch" with us! We also have a monthly book club called "Fireside Chatters!"
We have approximately 20,000 books that sit on our shelves waiting to be borrowed plus e-books that are available for check-out to our patrons online. We also subscribe to 70 periodicals and newspapers for patrons while they take a break and relax as they read. We also have a special section of Large Print Books and books on CD. We also make copies, can scan and e-mail documents for people.
If the library does not have a particular book, the interlibrary loan system allows us to borrow a book from another library.
Programs for our children flourish, including the popular summer reading program, book clubs, after school program, craft and story hours for preschoolers and many other programs throughout the year.
The first public library was organized in 1901 through civic clubs and volunteers and flourished through business people who kept the books in their stores. Two years later the town hired a full-time librarian and moved the books to a room in Sanborn's Opera House. Sanborn's Carnegie Library was built in 1911 and then remodeled in 1964 to add a children's library in the basement. Our current library was built in 2007 and is located at 407 Main Street.
Our library board consists of seven members who oversee the library's long-term plans and goals. They also keep our policies up-to-date. The Board holds its regular meeting at 5:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the library. Meetings are open to the public.
Our Co-Directors, Alvina Reitsma and Denise Bohnet handle the day-to-day functions of the library and are always ready to assist our patrons with a helpful smile.
